Baroque contemporain, un concept de Paul Ardenne pour Analix Forever

L’expansion sans limites de l’art et de la création, l’apogée de l’appropriation et la trivialisation du “sampling” dessinent un paysage contemporain changeant en profondeur. Derrière la persistance d’un travail qui respecte globalement les codes, on peut observer l’émergence de mouvements baroques qui mettent fin aux contraintes thématiques, stylistiques et symboliques – permettant ainsi la multiplicité et la nouveauté des approches créatives, et à l’art de toujours perdurer.
Mat Collishaw, qui a exposé pour la première fois à la galerie Analix Forever en Mars 1993, a toujours été fasciné par l’incessante avidité que les hommes éprouvent pour les images et par l’horreur délicieuse baudelairienne, cette recherche du frisson qui, alors que nous contemplons la mort, nous fait plus que jamais nous sentir vivants. L’esthétique de Collishaw prend ses racines dans toute l’histoire de l’art : de la mythologie grecque au baroque, il prend tout, manipule toutes les images et nous fait rêver, tel un “Maître de l’Illusion”.
Analix Forever propose, autour de Mat Collishaw, les oeuvres de quatre femmes artistes internationales, Elena Kovylina (Russie), Joanna Malinowska (Pologne), Dana Hoey (USA) et Marie Hendriks (Pays-Bas), ainsi que la prose poétique de l’anglais Robert Montgomery et le Big Shot du photographe “post-capitaliste” Frank Perrin. Elena Kovylina présente ses dernières vidéos, en lien avec ses peintures composées essentiellement d’autoportraits. Joanna Malinowska, qui a participé à la Biennale du Whitney en 2012, nous surprendra comme toujours par ses explorations anciennes et actuelles d’un Ailleurs parfois très proche. La photographe Dana Hoey expose à la fois des photographies désormais classiques et des oeuvres plus récentes ayant pour sujet l’étrangeté des interactions entre femmes ; Marie Hendriks une sculpture glamour qui allie sa passion pour les légendes anciennes, les animaux et la brillance de l’or. Frank Perrin capture notre regard par les yeux en miroir des photographes, dans une représentation sombre et fascinante du voyeurisme contemporain, alors que Robert Montgomery nous donne à voir plus encore qu’à entendre ses poèmes qui nous éblouissent telle une Magie Oubliée.
Ces sept artistes constituent un groupe informel que lie la passion de créer, ainsi que leur manière à la fois singulière et commune de puiser des références multiples dans l’histoire de l’art et d’infléchir constamment le réel qui les entoure par leur propre personnalité artistique. Tout en questionnant de manière aiguë notre existence contemporaine, ces sept artistes travaillent sur le mode baroque : prenons tout, nous disent-ils, et transformons ce tout en davantage encore.

The current infinite expansion of art and creation, the reign of appropriation, the trivialization of sampling, draw a deeply changing contemporary landscape. Beneath the still long-lasting more conventional works, we contemplate the emergence of renewed “baroque” forms, which abolish the thematic, stylistic and symbolic constraints and favor the multiplicity of creative approaches, the overflowing forms, and the never ending variety of art works.
Mat Collishaw, who presented his first solo show @ Analix Forever 20 years ago, in March 1993, has always been fascinated by the relentless human avidity for images, and by what Baudelaire called the “delicious horror”: our search for that frisson that we desire to feel again and again when looking at suffering, death, dereliction, and infinity. A frisson that makes us, as viewers, fell more alive. Collishaw’s esthetic takes roots in art history, from Greek mythology to Pre-Raphaelites and the baroque: he takes it all, manipulates all images, and enchants us, as “The Master of Illusion” he is recognized to be.
Around Mat Collishaw, Analix Forever is proposing recent works of four international female artists, the Russian Elena Kovylina, the Polish Joanna Malinowska, the American Dana Hoey and the Dutch Marie Hendriks – along with the poetic writings of Robert Montgomery (UK) and The Big Shot, the latest work by “post-capitalist” photographer Frank Perrin (France).
Elena Kovylina will present her latest videos as well as paintings relating to these videos, essentially self-portraits as she always performs herself; Joanna Malinowska, who showed and performed @ Whitney Biennial 2012 will surprise us with a mixed installation of novel and older explorations of the Elsewhere, as close as it might be; the photographer Dana Hoey, will present both “classical” and more recent photographs, concentrating on the strangeness of female-female interactions; and Marie Hendriks will show a glossy and glamorous recent sculpture combining her passion for legends, for animals and colors. Frank Perrin is capturing our gaze by the photographers’ eyes in a fascinating obscure representation of contemporary voyeurism and Robert Montgomery have us see rather than hear poems about emotion and perception, paradox and complexity, like a Forgotten Magic.
All seven artists constitute an informal group characterized by the deep joy of creation, by the multiple references they dig out the history of the arts and revisit in their very personal way, and by a constant intermixing of our surrounding world and their own artistic personality. While actively questioning contemporary existence, they work at deepening their own baroque artistic individuality: take it all and make more out of it.
